Diary, 1862-1863.

Diary of James Parks, a corporal in the 5th Light Artillery Battery during the Civil War. The diary spans March 1862 through January 1, 1863 and consists of brief entires written by Parks about his service in the battery. The entries described his every day activities and generally noted any sort of skirmishing or fighting that occurred in the vicinity. Parks made mention of the siege of Corinth, the battle at Perryville, and the final entries in the diary refer to the battle of Stones River. The diary provides an idea of the near constant state of action Parks and his unit faced in 1862, either marching or engaging the enemy from Missouri through Kentucky to Tennessee. A small ticket, found in the diary, seems to be a voucher for ten cartridges of ammunition for an Enfield rifle or a rifle musket. Also included is a typed transcription of the diary by the donor, Stuart Campbell.
